Strikes Using the Fist in Karate
KARATE PUNCH:
Using the first two knuckles, both knuckles are aligned with the top of the forearm to prevent the wrist from collapsing forward or backward. REVERSE KARATE PUNCH (standing, stepping, or lunging): The hand strikes as the opposite foot is forward. Primary targets: abdomen, kidneys, solar plexus, breast bone, ribs, throat, neck, face, temple, head. KARATE CENTER PUNCH (stepping): The same hand strikes as the foot that is forward. This strike is most commonly used in forms. Primary targets: abdomen, kidneys, solar plexus, breastbone, ribs, throat, neck, face, temple, head. HOOK PUNCH IN KARATE : The front hand strikes in circular motion with the elbow up. Primary targets: ribs, jaw, temple, kidneys, face. KARATE CROSS PUNCH: The back hand strikes in circular motion with the elbow up. Primary’ targets: ribs, jaw, temple, kidneys, face. KARATE UPPER CUT: Executed in an upward motion, the legs are used (as always) to increase power. Primary’ targets: groin, solar plexus, ribs, jaw, face. SECONDARY TARGETS CAN BE ANY VITAL AREAS. KARATE BACK FIST: Using the back of the hand, the focus is on the top two knuckles. Primary targets: temple, face. KARATE BOTTOM FIST: Use the outer blade of the fist, below the finger level, in a horizontal motion. Primary targets: neck, back of the head, face, temple. KARATE SIDE PUNCH: A front hand punch delivered in a straddle leg stance. Although it focuses off the shoulder, power is derived by the strike made in syncopation with a thrust from the hip. KARATE HAMMER FIST: Use the outer blade of the fist, below the finger level, in a vertical motion. Primary targets: spine, back of the neck, nose. KARATE JAB: A snapping front hand punch. Primary targets: jaw, nose, eyes. |
