KARATE KNIFE HAND STRIKES
KARATE SPEAR HAND:
Hit with the tops of the first three fingers. (The middle finger must be bent to make the top surfaces equal). Also, both the inner and outer edges of the hand are tensed, and the thumb is tucked to support the hand during the strike.
Primary targets: eyes, solar plexus, below the ribs, groin.
KARATE RIDGE HAND:
Use the inner blade of the hand below the last index finger joint.
Primary targets: groin, neck, back of the head, solar plexus, ribs, throat, temple, face.*
KARATE CHOP:
Strike with the outer blade of the hand below the finger level.
Primary targets: throat, neck, face.*
*Targets of the face include: bridge of the nose,
eyes, philtrum (the area between the upper lip
and the nose), cheekbones, jaw, and ears.
When striking with the outer blade of the hand, such as with a Karate knife hand or a chop, the thumb is tucked in toward the palm to support the outer blade of the hand.
When striking in the ridge hand position, the thumb is tucked in to avoid injury.
