Karate and Personal Goals and Visions for the New Year
Goals and Visions for 2012
I recently pondered my goals for 2011. Some goals I met, some I crushed, and some I totally failed at, but it was important for me to revisit those goals and self-evaluate my performance.
Today, I just made my goals for 2012. The goals are ambitious, but not out of reach, and I’m sharing them with you so if you could, please have a look and help me hold myself accountable:
My 2012 Goals Setting goals is an important aspect of growth – for family, business, for personal development, and for life.
Without goals to guide our actions, without that "X" on our map to navigate towards, we are wandering aimlessly.
Those of us who have achieved great things in the field of Martial Arts can be considered to be Martial Art Masters and even further accomplished -Professors.
And sure – Masters and Professors can still grow and be happy – but setting goals will keep us on the right path, and if we are to ever get off that path, we’ll know, and we can steer right back onto it.
Does a Martial Artist without goals ever succeed?
Perhaps, but how will he or she ever truly know?
In 2012, naturally, some things will happen that are unplanned, but I have a few basic visions I’d like to share with you today.
S.M.A.R.T. Goals - goals that are:
· S = Specific
· M = Measurable
· A = Attainable
· R = Relevant
· T = Timely
Even though I know your own set of goals will be completely different than mine, I hope this email will motivate you to set your own goals.
If you haven’t thought of your goals for 2012 yet – do it.
If you have – crush ‘em.
Personal Goal: Improve and incorporate good Family Habits As a parent of four, I understand the importance of guiding my children. However. just as important. I realize my roll is that of the tone setter for the household. My personal goal for 2012 is to continue to be aware of what tones I am putting out and further cultivate my attitude to better improve the family environment. Some times it doesn't’ feel like it but our children look up to us and take on our traits. Our example is their only guide so our responsibility is not a choice.
Martial Artist Goal: Many of you are aware that two years ago I was given the gift of a new hip. This amazing opportunity in my life was made possible by the Langberg Family and Cedar Sinai Medical Center , under the care of Andrew I. Spitzer MD; Director of the Joint Replacement Program, and for this, I will be forever grateful. I made a personal promise to all the doctors involved that I would not fight or compete in fighting anymore. My only hopes before surgery was that in the future I would again have the ability to demonstrate properly all that I have learned so that I could pass on the tradition of our art, as well as my personal style. In 2012 my goal as a Martial Artist is to cultivate my skills with a sound training program that includes diet, sleep and Karate, lots of Karate. By the end of 2012 our entire system will be documented and available in the form of text, pictures and video here at www.tombloommartialarts.com.
TBK Personal Goal: To Lead by example
“You never know what you have until it is gone” to coin a phrase. As I mentioned in my martial artist goal for 2012, I had a hip replacement. As adults we gradually have to let go of some of our dreams as for example… To become a “Rock Star” play in the NFL, or win Mr. America. Recently there was a time when I thought I would never be able to walk again. Well I can walk, kind of jog and almost run… again. I can kick over my head, including spinning heel kicks and day by day, I am regaining my skills. But I have a much greater skill that came out of all this, it is called “appreciation”. Just as blind man's hearing becomes more acute, my appreciation for everything has been heightened through this experience. My goal for 2012 is to convey this appreciation to everyone I touch in my life. Things are so much brighter when you can appreciate what you have and not constantly complain about what you don’t.
TBK Business Goal: 200 Students by December 31st, 2012 In 2010, my goal was to reach 100 students, which I met in the month of July.
In 2011, my goal was to reach 150 students, which I did not meet – ending the year at just over 125 students – but that’s okay.
In 2012, my goal is to reach 200 students, which means an additional 75 students from this point forward.
It’s definitely not out of reach, but it’s not a given either. Currently, the studio grows at a rate of about 2-3 students per month, which means an additional 30 students for 2012 if the growth does not accelerate.
What should I do to gain that additional 45 students?
What do you think?
Let’s Make 2012 an EPIC YEAR My 2012 goals are posted publicly on our site at: www.tombloommartialarts.com
A Zen Master once told me that goals are just something to get rid of.
I get it now, there’s not much more to say than that.
Hopefully you have your S.M.A.R.T. goals ready, and if you’d like to share 1 or 2 on our web site. (Maybe as a way for you to publicly hold yourself accountable), I would gladly welcome them.
Let's make 2012 epic!
Stay strong, and all the best to you and your family,
Professor Bloom, World Karate Champion
